MDSPOSA offers various training for Special Police and security professionals throughout Maryland. Some of the courses that we offer are described below. Online and In Person Special Police & Security Guard Courses
We offer certified online courses for both Maryland Special Police and Security Guards. The Special Police course is 88 hours for initial certification and 12 hours for in-service certification, which is completed every 3 years. The security guard course requires 12 hours of initial training and 8 hours in service every 3 years. Click here for details.
Baton, Pepper Spray, Defensive Tactics, Handcuffing
This course is seperate and in addition to the Special Police or Security Guard Course and is taught over 4 days and must be conducted in person. This course certifies the participants in Baton, Pepper Spray, Defensive Tactics, and handcuffing. The participants must be physically able to punch, fight, roll, and crouch.
First Aid, CPR, AED, Blood Born Pathogens, and Bleeding/Wound Care
This is a certified course offered in addition to any of our other courses and certifies participants for first aid, CPR, AED, and wound care, including the application of tourniquets and wound packing. This is a one day course.
Rifle/Shotgun Training
This course is a one-day course on the proper handling of a rifle and shotgun in the field and the transportation of rifles and shotguns within a moving vehicle in a security or special police capacity.
Handgun Training For Security Professionals
This is a two day course that meets and exceeds Maryland's requirements for handgun carry for a security guard, special police officer, private detective, or armored car driver. This course includes a 50 round qualification.
Simunitions/UTM Training
This course is a force-on-force training course that uses roll players and simunitions firearms, which are real firearms converted to shoot a simunition round. Participants will experience real-life encounters and engage in de-escalation or the use of deadly force, as well as report writing.
Security Management
This is an advanced course for security management professionals who wish to advance their careers and learn more about policies and procedures for effective special police and security management.
Active Shooter Prevention
This is an advanced course for armed security and special police officers. The course covers the dynamics of responding to active shooter situations with a one, two, or four man team. This includes room clearing, threat identification, risk mitigation, and deadly force application within the use of force continuum.
JPX Certification
We provide JPX training and certification through our partner JPX International. JPX is a pepper spray gun with a 23 foot range. It fires a "glob" of pepper jel that is twice as hot as anything currently on the market. Because this fires a glob instead of a projectile it is not classified as a firearm by the ATF, even through it uses a 9mm primer. Unlike a pepper ball gun, this is certified and does not emit a powder that can enter ventilation systems and last for weeks.
Online Training Delivery
MDSPOSA also provides a wide variety of online training that is delivered through a web browser. This training is automated and self-paced. Upon completion, you are awarded a certificate. Some of these training courses are state certified with their individual states (not Maryland). This is great for someone who wishes to further their training without attending a class in person or via zoom. Check here for details.
